About Dames Ferry Wildlife Management Area

Dames Ferry Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a 17,000-acre expanse located in Burke and Richmond counties in Georgia, adjacent to the Savannah River. The area features a diverse landscape of hardwood and pine forests, wetlands, bottomland hardwoods, creeks, and riverfront habitat. This varied habitat supports an abundance of wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and numerous small game species, making it a popular destination for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the area prioritizes habitat conservation and sustainable outdoor recreation. The WMA provides multiple opportunities for fishing in the Savannah River and surrounding ponds, as well as hiking along unpaved roads and trails. Dames Ferry is well known for waterfowl and turkey hunting, particularly during the fall and winter seasons. Though primitive, the area includes several access points for boating and fishing, and seasonal hunting permits are required for many activities. Visitors appreciate the quiet, remote environment for wildlife viewing and photography, as the land is less developed and less trafficked compared to nearby public lands. The WMA plays an important role in preserving regional ecosystem function and connecting habitat corridors along the Savannah River corridor. The area's natural beauty, combined with low-density recreation use and abundant game, appeals to hunters, anglers, birders, and outdoor photographers seeking a less crowded wildlife experience close to Augusta, Georgia.
